An-Nawawi on the Friday Prayer

By Abu Amina Elias for FaithinAllah.org

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

An-Nawawi records in his book Riyad us-Saliheen:

Allah said:

When the prayer has been concluded, then disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah and remember Allah often that you may succeed.

Surah Al-Jumuah 62:10

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. Adam was created on Friday and on it he entered Paradise and was expelled from therein.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever performs ablution in an excellent manner and comes to Friday prayer and listens while remaining quiet, then he will have his sins forgiven until the next Friday and an additional three days, but whoever plays with pebbles has behaved frivolously.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The five prayers, Friday to Friday, and Ramadan to Ramadan will be expiation for the sins between them as long as major sins are avoided.

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

People need to stop neglecting the Friday prayers or else Allah will place a seal over their hearts and they will become heedless.

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Taking a bath on Friday is an obligation upon every person who has reached the age of puberty.

Samurah ibn Jundab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever performs ablution on the day of Friday has done well, but it is better to take a bath.

Salman-Al-Farisi reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

No one takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, uses oil or perfume in his house, then proceeds for prayer, and does not separate two persons sitting together, then prays as much as is written for him, and remains silent while the prayer leader is delivering the sermon, except that his sins between this Friday and the previous would be forgiven.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

During the day of Friday is an hour when any Muslim servant who stands in prayer and asks Allah the Exalted for something will have it granted.

Abu Burdah reported: Abdullah ibn Umar said to me, “Have you heard anything narrated by your father from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about the special moment on Friday?” I said:

Yes. I heard him narrate that the Messenger of Allah said: It is the moment between the beginning of the sermon and the completion of the prayer.

Aws ibn Aws reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, the most virtuous of your days is Friday. Adam was created on it, and on it he died, and on it the trumpet will be blown and the shout will be made, so increase your supplications for me for your supplications are presented to me.
