The Question:

Is Prophet MUHAMMAD (pbuh) Superior to other Prophets?

ALLAH, The Exalted and The Prophet (pbuh) Answer:

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 285: [2:285]

"The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. "We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His messengers." And they say: "We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys."
[Yusuf Ali]

What the above Verse basically means is that the Messengers and the true believers make no distinction between the Prophets of Allah; it is a condition of faith for believers that they must believe in each and every one of Allah's Messengers without exception! A Muslim who claims to deny even one of the Messengers of Allah, will leave the fold of Islam and will become a disbeliever.

The Jews disbelieved in Prophet Isa (pbuh) and were declared disbelievers by Allah (SWT); and the Christians disbelieved in Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and suffered the same fate! But as a Muslim, it is a condition of our faith that we believe in each and every one of Allah's Messengers (peace be upon them all), without exception.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 253: [2:253]

"Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. And if Allah had so wiled it, those who followed after them would not have fought one with another after the clear proofs had come unto them. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will." [Pickthall]

In the above Aayah of Surah Baqarah Allah, The Exalted Himself declares that HE has given more privileges to some Prophets above others, and raised some Prophets above others.

Unfortunately today, some ignorant Muslims try to raise the honour of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by belittling the other Prophets of Allah (peace be upon them all) or comparing the other Prophets as if in a competition; and that is incorrect. Each Prophet (pbuh) of Allah (SWT) has been given his station and 'maqaam' by Allah Subhanah Watala; and according to ALLAH'S Will and Wisdom, ALLAH has raised in Honour whom HE Wills.

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) himself disliked it when someone compared or tried to raise Muhammad (pbuh) above the other Prophets.

[1] [Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.626 - Narrated by Abu Huraira]
Once while a Jew was selling something, he was offered a price that he was not pleased with. So, he said, "No, by Him Who gave Moses superiority over all human beings!" Hearing him, an Ansari man got up and slapped him on the face and said, "You say: By Him Who Gave Moses superiority over all human beings although the Prophet (Muhammad) is present amongst us!"The Jew went to the Prophet (saws) and said, "O Abu-l-Qasim! I am under the assurance and contract of security, so what right does so-and-so have to slap me?" The Prophet (saws) asked the other, "Why have you slapped him?". He told him the whole story. The Prophet (saws) became angry, till anger appeared on his face, and said, "Don't give superiority to any Prophet amongst Allah's Prophets, for when the trumpet will be blown, everyone on the earth and in the heavens will become unconscious except those whom Allah will exempt. The trumpet will be blown for the second time and I will be the first to be resurrected to see Moses holding Allah's Throne. I will not know whether the unconsciousness which Moses received on the Day of Tur has been sufficient for him, or has he got up before me. And I do not say that there is anybody who is better than (Prophet) Yunus bin Matta."

The Prophet (pbuh) said, "None should say that I am better than (Prophet) Yunus bin Matta."

[2] [Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.627 - Narrated by Abu Huraira]
The Messenger of Allah (saws) specifically mentioned the excellence of Prophet Yunus (a.s.),because it might seem that Prophet Yunus (a.s.) apparently lapsed in his duty and as a result was put in a severe trial by Allah Subhanah, and was apparently 'punished' for his lapse in duty! But Prophet Mohamed (saws) was so humble in his greatness, that he (saws) did not even approve of anyone saying that he (saws) was better than Prophet Yunus (a.s.), the noble Prophet of Allah Subhanah.

[3] [Tirmidhi, Vol. 6, Book #44, Hadith #3352 - Narrated by Anas bin Malik]
A man said to the Prophet: “O best of creatures!” So he said: “That is Ibrahim.” (Sahih).

[4] [Sunan Abi Dawud, Book #42, #Hadith 77 - Narrated by Anas bin Malik]
Anas said: A man said to the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him): O best of all creatures! The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said : That was Abraham (peace be upon him).

[5] [Bukhari, Book #60, Hadith #49 - Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila]
Ka`b bin Ujrah met me and said, "Shall I not give you a present I got from the Prophet?" `Abdur- Rahman said, "Yes, give it to me." I said, "We asked Allah's Messenger (pbuh) saying, 'O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! How should one (ask Allah to) send blessings on you, the members of the family, for Allah has taught us how to salute you (in the prayer)?' He said, 'Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.'

[6] [Sunan an-Nasa'i, Book #13, Hadith #110 - Narrated Ka'b bin 'Ujrah]
'We said: "O Messenger of Allah (pbuh), we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (One of the narrators) 'abdur Rahman said: "We used to say: 'And also upon us.'" Abu Abdur-rahman (An Nasa'i) said: This is more worthy of being correct than the one that is before it. And we do not know of anyone who said "Amr bin Murrah" in it other than in this case. And Allah (SWT) knows best. (Sahih)
